No-Refrigeration Drinks: Ginger Ale and Sumac Lemonade

Refrigeration can be difficult for camp cooks. Even when an ice chest or refrigerator is available, priorities may mean there’s no room for all the drinks you might enjoy.  Here’s where fermented drinks, like Old Fashioned Ginger Ale, can add diversity and healthful options to your menu planning.

Old Fashioned Ginger Ale is a whey-based fermented drink. It uses whey from active culture yogurt. This may be from your own yogurt, or from commercial brand active culture yogurts (like Chobani, Stonyfield or other Greek-style yogurts). Add grated or chopped fresh ginger root, fresh lime or lemon juice and/or peel, sugar, salt and water and let nature take her course. In 2 to 4 days, your Ginger Ale should be ready to consume “as is” or combine with seltzer for additional fizz.
